Bravado is a song by New Zealand recording artist Lorde, taken from her debut EP The Love Club EP. A chamber pop song, it was released on 6 September 2013 by Universal Music Group (UMG) in Europe as a promotional single. Written by Lorde and Joel Little and produced by Little, the track speaks about Lorde's introverted nature and having to feign confidence in the music industry. Upon the release of the EP, "Bravado" peaked at number five on the New Zealand National Singles Chart and number twenty-nine on the US Hot Rock Songs.
Background and composition
I am quite reserved in general and I'm not a very confident person. But I knew I was about to be entering an industry where you have to be. And so it was kind of my personal pep talk. Like kind of coming to a point where I could put on confidence.
"Bravado" was solely written by Lorde (credited under her birth-name Ella Yelich-O'Connor) and Joel Little.[3] Lorde said in a 2014 Rolling Stone interview that she gets "paralyzingly nervous a lot of times, so I tried bravado. The way I dress and carry myself, a lot of people find it intimidating. I think my whole career can be boiled down to the one word I always say in meetings: strength."[4]

The lyrics of "Bravado" speak on the idea "of false confidence delivering real confidence" and of Lorde stepping into a line of work "where everyone would be watching me, and everyone would want to talk to me and confront me."[5] Lorde has cited the line "Me found bravery in my bravado" on Kanye West's song "Dark Fantasy" as an influence.[6] "Bravado" is a chamber pop song,[7] runs for a duration of 3:41 (three minutes and 41 seconds),[8] and plays in common time at a tempo of 88 beats per minute.[9] The song is in the key of B minor, with the vocal range spanning from F♯3 to D5.[9]
Release and promotion
In 2012, The Love Club EP was freely available on SoundCloud.[10] Later in March 2013, the EP was released for digital sales on iTunes Stores through Universal Music Group.[8] On 6 September 2013, "Bravado" was released as a digital download single on iTunes Stores in countries across Europe.[1] To promote the EP, Lorde held a concert at Le Poisson Rouge in New York and performed the song among other tracks from The Love Club EP on 6 August 2013, becoming her first U.S. show.[11] On 3 October 2013, the singer held a concert at the Warsaw Venue in Brooklyn and performed the song among other tracks from the album.[12] In November 2013, Lorde performed the song on the Late Show with David Letterman to promote Pure Heroine, only backed by a drummer and a keyboard player.[13][14]
