"Bougie" is the seventh single by American recording artist Jessi Malay off of her upcoming studio album. It was written by Malay and song writer Mika Let, in early 2012. The song was released along with a lyric video on 21 November 2012.
Composition and recording
"Bougie" was written by Malay, Mika Let, Christian engineering, while production was handled by Deep Watters and Morgan Taylor Reid. The track was recorded at The Wolfiskin Compound, then later mixed and finalized by Morgan Taylor Reid.
Lyrics and style
Jessi stated via twitter prior to the release of bougie, that it was inspired by her love for fashion and being proud of your individuality. Malay originally came up with the idea for Bougie at the 2012 New York Fashion Week. Many different L.A designers and brands influenced the lyrics and theme behind the message of the song. As for the instrumental, Malay stated in an interview with Coalition group that the song was inspired by the Brazilian culture. many of the drums and beats are samba undertones that you would typically hear in a Brazilian song. It was also inspired by pop/electro media.
Critical reception
The song received favorable reviews from music critics. After the launch of Bougie's official Lyric video, several online articles reviewing the song were applauding her new style. It received many positive tweets and brought in a much higher fan base for Jessi.
Live performances and IHeartRadio success
In January 2013, it was announced Jessi would be starting her "Bougie Club Tour". Malay traveled all along the United States along with locations in Brazil and China to promote the single and other songs from her upcoming 2013 album. To date, Jessi has had 15 performances. The Tour went on pause when Malay was selected to participate in the 2013 "Macys IHeart Radio Rising Star Contest". The Contest brought up her new found popularity even higher, and she currently is placed in the top 5 contestants.
