Bostan (Persian: بستان, also Romanized as Bostān, Basāţīn, Bisaitin, and Bustān)[1] is a city in and the capital of Bostan District, in Dasht-e Azadegan County, Khuzestan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 7,314, in 1,257 families.[2] It is mainly known for its battles during the Iran-Iraq War.

The town

The town is situated in the Khuzestan province in Iran, with the towns of Dehloran to the north, Dezful to the east, Hoveizeh to the south, Susangerd to the southeast, and Iraq to the west. The town itself holds a grand mosque and municipal building.

The people are primarily Persian and Arabic, speaking both Arabic and Persian. The town and surrounding villages consist mainly of the Bani Taraf tribe.

Geography

Low rolling hills are situated in the northeast and the Karkheh River runs close to the town proper. Water from this river is pumped regularly into the farmlands. Sand dunes and marshes are situated to the northwest, along with a narrow pass called Tang-e-Chazzabeh.

Economy

The town's main source of income comes from production of foods, livestock, and handicrafts. Buffalo, bull, camels, and sheep are regularly exported to other cities. Oil is also a primary resource.
