Boisar is a Census Town in Palghar Taluka and an industrial area[1] in the Thane district in the state of Maharashtra, India.

Industry

The city currently has more than 1500 industrial units, including global corporations such as Tata Steel, JSW Steel, BARC, and the Tarapur power station. Tarapur Industrial Estate is a large industrial area located near Mumbai Port/Mumbai Harbour, JNPT, and the Trans Thane Creek (TTC) MIDC. This area accommodates companies producing chemicals, bulk drugs, steel, and textiles.

Calyx Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (the world's largest bulk drugs manufacturing company), Indrox Global (P) Ltd,[2] S.D. Fine Chemicals, Sarex,[3] Ganesh Benzoplast[4] (near-monopoly on the food preservative sodium benzoate), Galaxy Surfactants,[5] and New Alliance Dye Chem Pvt Ltd. (sequestering agents).

Bulk Drugs

Lupin (the largest manufacturer of the anti-TB drug rifampicin), Custom Capsule Pvt.Ltd. (different sizes of capsules and a world leader in veterinary capsules and manual capsule filling machines), Aarti Drugs (makers of anti-HIV drugs, indinavir, and nevirapine), Strides Arcolab, and S.S Pharmachem. Several other API manufacturers of API's and Bulk Drugs are also located in Boisar such as Melody Healthcare Pvt. ltd (the largest manufacturer of the anti-asthmatic drug Montelukast Sodium / Salmeterol Xinafoate), Unimax Chemicals, Camlin Ltd etc.

Steel and Alloys

Karamtara Engineering (with 4 manufacturing units), Tata Steel, Encorp Powertrans (hot dip galvanizers), Jindal Steel, Maharashtra Organo Metallic Catalysts (P) Ltd. (India's leading tin specialty chemicals manufacturer), Viraj,[6] and Mukat Tanks & Vessels (steel pipes).

From last 5-7 years construction work is in full swings with more than 2 square feet Construction work is in process. Environment

The first "Common Effluent Treatment Plant" (CETP) in Maharashtra was built at Tarapur.[3] The Tarapur Industrial Manufacturers' Association is responsible for planting samplings.

Transportation

Boisar is located 45 kilometres (28 mi) north of Virar on the Western Railway line of Mumbai Suburban Railway. Boisar can be reached by Shuttle/MEMU trains from Virar, as well as Churchgate-Dahanu local trains, and some long-distance trains as noted below. By road, Boisar can be reached by taking the National Highway NH-8, 22 kilometres (14 mi) from Chilhar Phata. There are regular state transport buses from Boisar to Palghar, Thane, Bhiwandi, and Wada.

An average of nearly 77,000 commuters travel the 63.8 km from Dahanu Road to Mumbai every day on shuttle services via Boisar.

Mumbai Suburban EMU Services became available on April 16, 2013.

There are twenty MEMU services between Virar-Dahanu Road and long-distance passenger train services of Mumbai-Ahmedabad and Virar-Surat, as well as train service to Palghar and Dahanu Road.

By road, Boisar also has a direct State transport connection to Kolhapur, Satara, Karad, Pune, Thane, Paithan, Kalyan, Patoda, Bhiwandi, Aurangabad, Bhusawal, Nandurbar, Shirdi, Jawahar, Nashik, etc. With respect to Palghar and Dahanu, there are extra connections to Miraj, Ahmednagar, Ratnagiri, Dhule, Malegaon, and other destinations.

Power generation

Asia's first nuclear power plant, Tarapur Atomic Power Station (TAPS), is located 12 km from Boisar. There are four units currently operational at this location. The first two Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) type reactors, are the oldest commercial nuclear reactors in India. The two newer units are the largest Pressurized Heavy Water (PHWR) reactors built in India. The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (B.A.R.C) is also located nearby and consists of a waste immobilization plant and a fuel reprocessing plant.

Tarapur Industrial Estate has proposed the creation of a gas-fired power station at the Tarapur Industrial Area.

Tarapur Fort and Chinchini Beach are the main tourist attractions in the area. The famous resort Mamacha Gaon is located east of Boisar, near the national highway.
