Bohemia (newspaper)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bohemia is the title of newspapers in Prague. From 1828 to 1938, a newspaper in German appeared under this title. From 2000, a German-Czech newspaper (Czech: Česko-Německé noviny Bohemia) took the name, continuing the Deutsch-Tschechische Zeitung für gute Nachbarschaft (German-Czech newspaper of good neighbourhood).

Bohemia (1828–1938)

The German newspaper Bohemia – Unterhaltungsblätter für gebildete Stände (Bohemia – entertaining pages for educated classes) appeared from 1828 to 1938 in Prague, from 1828 to 1835 as a supplement of the Prager Zeitung. The name was changed frequently: in 1828 Unterhaltungsblätter, in 1830 Bohemia oder Unterhaltungsblätter für gebildete Stände, in 1830 Bohemia ein Unterhaltungsblatt, finally in 1918 Deutsche Zeitung Bohemia (German newspaper Bohemia). Famous writers for the newspaper have included Egon Erwin Kisch and Johannes Urzidil.

The newspaper was printed by several companies:

  • Gottlieb Haase & Sons (1828–1872)
  • Bohemia Aktiengesellschaft (1872–1877)
  • Frantisek Klutsack (1878)
  • Andreas Haase (1879–1919)
  • Alfred Korn (1919–1920)
  • Verlag Deutsche Zeitung-Aktiengesellschaft (1920–1933)
  • Rota-Aktiengesellschaft für Zeitung- und Buchdruck (1933–1938)

The newspaper was terminated in 1938. The archives can be found in the National Library of the Czech Republic.
