Bodinayakanur (also spelled Bodi Naickanur; or shortened to just Bodi) is a city and a municipality in Theni district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

Demographics

As of the census of India 2001, Bodinayakkanur had a population of 73,410 comprising 36,774 males and 36,636 females, making the sex ratio (number of females per thousand males) of the town to 996. A total of 7,891 people were under six years of age and the child sex ratio (number of females per thousand males under six years of age) stood at 916. The town had an average literacy of 79.01%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. A total of 5,184 comprising 7.91% of the population belonged to Scheduled Castes (SC) and 25 comprising 0.04% of the population belonged to Scheduled tribes (ST). There were are total of 17,702 households in the town. As of 2001, Bodinayakkanur had a total of 26,805 main workers: 1,496 cultivators, 9,627 agricultural labourers, 408 in house hold industries and 15,274 other workers. There was a total of 2,625 marginal workers: 52 marginal cultivators, 1,393 marginal agricultural labourers, 32 marginal workers in household industries and 1,148 other marginal workers.[1]

History

Bodinayakanur is the second largest and most populated city in Theni district; the city is the taluk head quarters. Due to the weather and natural beauties, the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, called the city as "South Kashmir". A small palace was built in the city in the nineteenth century by the Rajah of Travancore.

Location

Bodinayakanur is situated at the foot-hill of Western ghats in Theni district. It is located on the Cochin-Madurai-Rameswaram National Highway 49 (India). It is accessible by the road from Chennai, Madurai and various parts of the State. Bodinayakanur was once connected with Madurai by railway, which is about to be upgraded to Broad Gauge.

Economy

The main business is agriculture. Paddy, Sugar cane, Banana, Corn, Maize are some of the main crops planted here. The climate is very good. The average temperature in day time is 25 degree Celsius to 30 degree Celsius. It is on the border between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The major plantation crops here is Silk Cotton, Mango, Pepper, Coffee, Tea and Cardamom.[citation needed]. Athiyuthu, Anakarai two hilly areas are located to the north of Bodinayakanur.This place is famous for high quality coffee production. The coffee cultivation in these areas were carried out for more than 250 years.

Nowadays Bodinayakanur is spotted for film shooting locations,in and around Bodi natural habitat are shown via tamil flims.

Politics

Bodinayakkanur assembly constituency is part of Theni (Lok Sabha constituency).[2]

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalitha, was elected for the first time as Member of Legislative Assembly from Bodinayakanur Constituency.
Current Tamil Nadu finance minister O.Panneer Selvam B.A, is the Member of Legislative Assembly from Bodinayakanur Constituency

Picnic Spots

Near by hill station location are Kurangani,Central Station,Topstation,Agamalai,Bodi mettu and Kozhuku Malai.Kotakudi Plantation which is located in Kozhuku Malai, where the world highest grown tea are cultivated.
