BitPay is a Bitcoin startup company headquartered in Atlanta Georgia. Founded in May 2011 by Anthony Gallippi and Stephen Pair, BitPay is the leading Bitcoin payment service provider,[1] for which the company has been called the "PayPal of Bitcoin".[2] As of January 2014, BitPay provides payment processing services for more than 20,000 businesses,[3] including the gaming giant Zynga,[4] popular blogging platform WordPress,[5] and the NBA's Sacramento Kings, and has processed over US$100 million worth of bitcoin transactions.[2] The company also provides a payroll API whereby American employees can elect to have all or part of their salary paid in bitcoin. BitPay processed over US$3 million worth of bitcoin transactions in 2012 and ended the year with more than 2,100 merchants using the platform.[6] In January 2013 the company announced US$510,000 in angel investment, its first external capital after being internally bootstrapped.[7] In June 2013, BitPay received an additional US$2 million venture capital investment led by the Founders Fund.[8] In December of 2013, Hong Kong business magnate Li Ka-shing invested through his Horizons Ventures firm about $2.7 million into BitPay.[9]
