Birdville High School (BHS) is a public high school located in the city of North Richland Hills, Texas and is the second youngest school in the Birdville Independent School District(second to Walker Creek Elementary). Established in 1999, it was the third high school built into the Birdville Independent School District. Birdville High School is home to the Birdville Hawks and hosts grades 9-12.[1] For the 2009-2010 school year, according to the TEA (Texas Education Agency), Birdville High School's population consisted of 6.3% Black/African American, 20.6% Hispanic/Latino(a), 68.3% White/Caucasian, 0.6% Native American, and 4.2% Asian/Pacific Islander.[2]

Academics

Birdville High School has a variety of Advanced Placement courses offered, including Math, Science, Social Studies, English, Foreign Language, Fine Arts, and Computer Science.[3] The majority of Birdville High School's TAKS scores are higher than both the District and State's average percentage of meeting or exceeding standards in all grades tested.[4]

Athletics

Football

The Birdville Hawks Football Team plays in Texas Division 4A Football. They host their games at the Birdville ISD Fine Arts/Athletics Complex in North Richland Hills, Texas which they share with Richland High School and Haltom High School. The BISD Complex can and is also used to host soccer games and other fine arts events.

BasketBall

The Birdville Hawks Boys Basketball Team is coached by Jeff Fitch and is currently playing in Texas Division 4A Boys Basketball. The Birdville Hawks Basketball Team were the 2010 Boys' Basketball Conference 4A Bi-District Champions in the UIL Conference 4A Boys Basketball 2009-2010 Playoffs.[6]

The Birdville Lady Hawks Basketball Team is coached by Kenny Yates and is currently playing in Texas Division 4A Girls Basketball. The Lady Hawks Basketball Team has participated in the UIL Conference 4A Girls Basketball 2006, 2007, and 2008 Playoffs.[7][8][9]

Baseball

The Birdville Hawks Baseball Team is coached by David Hatcher, and is currently playing in Texas Division 4A Baseball. They host their games at the Hawk Yard in North Richland Hills, Texas. The Birdville Hawks Baseball Team were the Semifinalist in the 2007-2008 UIL Conference 4A Baseball Playoffs and were the Area Champions and Region 1 Quarterfinalist of the 2009-2010 UIL Conference 4A Baseball Playoffs.[10]

Volleyball

The Birdville Lady Hawks Volleyball Team is coached by Courtney Grimes and is currently playing in Texas Division 4A Girls Volleyball. The Lady Hawks Volleyball Team advanced to the 2004 and 2005 Area Qualifiers,[11][12] 2006 Bi-District Qualifiers,[13] 2007 District Qualifiers,[14] 2008 Regional Qualifiers,[15] and were the 2009 Bi-District and District Champions of the UIL Conference 4A Volleyball Playoffs.[16]

Track and Field

The Birdville Flyin' Hawks Track and Field Team is coached by Cooper Mitchell and has medaled in numerous Track and Field competitions.

  • Whitney Gibson won a Bronze medal in Long Jump during the 2006 UIL Conference 4A Girls State Track and Field Meet, a Silver medal in Triple Jump and a Bronze in Long Jump during the 2007 UIL Conference 4A Girls State Track and Field Meet, and two Silver medals in Triple and Long Jump during the 2008 UIL Conference 4A Girls State Track and Field Meet.[17][18][19]
  • Tommie Powers won a Bronze Medal in Pole Vault during the 2002 UIL Conference 4A State Girls Track and Field Meet, a Silver medal in Pole Vault during the 2003 UIL Conference 4A State Girls Track and Field Meet, and a Gold Medal in Pole Vault during the 2004 UIL Conference 4A State Girls Track and Field Meet.[20][21]
  • Toby Zelt won a Gold medal in Pole Vault during the 2003 UIL Conference 4A State Boys Track and Field Meet.[21]
  • Derek Yorek won a Bronze medal in the 3200 Meter Dash during the 2001 UIL Conference 4A State Boys Track and Field Meet.[22]

Other Sports

  • Birdville Lady Hawks Softball is coached by Wade Hopson. They have participated in the 2010 UIL State Tournament.[23]
  • Birdville Hawks Girls Soccer is coached by Eddie Brown. In 2007 they advanced to the UIL Conference 4A Girls Soccer Regional Semi-Finals.[24]
  • Birdville's Hawk Tennis Team, coached by Celina Burris, has reached the State Playoffs many times including most recently the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 season.[25]
  • Birdville Hawks Boys Soccer is coached by Roger Garcia and were the 2010 UIL Area Champions.[26]
  • Birdville Mighty Hawks Swim Team is coached by Mike Teague. The Mighty Hawk Swim Team placed 1st in District for boys and 5th for girls, and had 15 swimmers advance to the Regional Championships during the 2009-2010 season.[27]
  • Birdville Swinging Hawks Golf Team is coached by Ian Floyd. Zach Collings of the team placed 5th in the 2009 UIL Golf State Championship and 15th in the 2010 UIL Golf State Championship.[28][29]
  • Birdville Mens Gymnastics advanced to Regional Meet, State Qualifiers and were the 2007 District Champions.[30]
  • Birdville Women's Gymnastics were also ranked 9th in the 2005 Gymnastics High School State Women.[31]

Fine arts

Band

The Birdville Mighty Hawk Marching Band is under the direction of Michael Cheripka, Gary Barnard, and Hannah Boyle. They placed 5th in the 2003 UIL 4A State Marching Band Contest and 4th in the 2005 UIL 4A State Marching Band Contest. They also placed 11th in the 2011 UIL 4A State Marching Band Contest.[32][33] They also placed 2nd along with an Outstanding Music Award in the 2009 Bands of America Super Regionals Class AAA and placed 10th in the 2009 Bands of America Super Regional Finals.[34] Birdville High School marched in the 122nd Tournament of Roses Parade 2011 along with Richland High School and Haltom High School as the All Birdville Marching Band.[35] October 29, 2011 the band competed at the Area marching contest and placed third advancing to State.

The Band has received the UIL SweepStakes award at the Region 5 UIL 4A Concert & Sightreading Contest for 6 consecutive years from 2002 to 2007.[36] The Band has also had many members through the years participate in the 4A and 5A TMEA All-State Band.

Choir

The Birdville High School Singing Hawks Choir is under the direction of Amy Allibon and Peggy Graff. The Choir has received the UIL Sweepstakes award at the Region 5 UIL 4A Concert & Sightreading Contest for Mixed, Treble, and Tenor/Bass Choir for 2001 and 7 consecutive years from 2005 to 2011. They also received the UIL sweepstakes award for Tenor/Bass Choir in 2003 and 2 and for Mixed and Tenor/Bass Choir in 2004. In 2011, all the Singing Hawk choirs received sweepstakes at UIL. The Birdville High School Chorale also performed for TMEA in 2007.[36] The Choir has also has many members through the years participate in the 4A TMEA All-State Choir.

Theatre

The Birdville High School Stage Hawks Theatre is under the direction of Christopher Williamson. The 2009 production of The Boyfriend won the Betty Lynn Buckley Award for Best Musical and Best Set. The 2010 production of Bye Bye Birdie! was also the winner of the Betty Lynn Buckley Award for Best Musical, Best Student Orchestra, Best Set Design, and Best Lighting Design. The 2011 production of Anything Goes was nominated for Best Musical, won Best Costumes, Best Set Design, Best Student Orchestra, and Excellence in Choreography.[37]
