Binoy Henyo or Wonder Kid (international title) is a Filipino drama-comedy television series created and developed by Marlon Miguel and produced by GMA Network. The show premiered on July 22, 2013 on the network's pre-primetime slot, replacing Home Sweet Home, and on July 24, 2013 worldwide via GMA Pinoy TV. It stars David Remo as the titular character, with Sheena Halili, Luis Alandy, Nova Villa and Gwen Zamora. Winnie Hollis-Reyes executive produced the series and Albert Langitan directed the show. The series concluded it's nine weeks on September 20, 2013 with the total of 45 episodes and replaced by Prinsesa ng Buhay Ko on its timeslot.

The forty-five minute scripted drama centers on the titular character, Binoy, a six-year-old genius boy and his struggles with poverty and his longing for a father figure in his life. The show garnered both high ratings and positive feedback from viewers and critics, from its premiere telecast.^[1]

The series chronicles the ingenuity and craftsmanship of a genius boy named Binoy, who possesses a big and optimistic heart despite his struggles with poverty and his longing for a father figure in his life.

Cast and characters

Main characters

Robin "Binoy" Santos – portrayed by David Remo, a six-year-old suburban boy with a stunning IQ and a love for science. He lives with his mother Agnes and granny Chato. Binoy has a pet pigeon he called "Einstein" named after Albert Einstein, the famous theoretical physicist. He also has a robot he named "Bibot" or short for Binoy's robot. Binoy often used the catchphrase "Kalma ka lang!" (literally means "Just keep calm!"). His innate creativity, wild imagination and genuine curiosity lead him to invent and do things that will help the people he loved, though sometimes, his inventions cause more harm than benefit. Despite all the problems he is encountering, Binoy will never lose hope to be reunited with his long-lost father.^[2]

Agnes Santos – portrayed by Sheena Halili, Binoy's kind-hearted mother who loves him unconditionally and will do anything to protect him. She has single-handedly raised Binoy to become a respectful, smart, and loving boy. In spite of her personal hardships and her struggles of not being able to read and write, she will strive to learn and get an education as she works hard to make ends meet just to give her son a good life.^[3]^[4]

Francis Sandoval – portrayed by Luis Alandy, Agnes' former flame and the estranged father of Binoy. He comes from a well-off family and works as one of the top executives of the company established by his father. Francis is a good-looking and intelligent man with a big heart for others. He longs for a child, but unfortunately, his wife Emily, cannot give him one, pushes him more to search for his long-lost son—Binoy. He eventually caught in a dilemma between his wife and Agnes.^[5]

Lola Chato – portrayed by Nova Villa, the aunt of Agnes. Lola Chato is a mother figure to Agnes and grandmother to Binoy. Chato works as a seamstress. She is a loving and is the stereotypical "cool granny" who loves dancing and colorful dresses. She usually gives bright ideas to Binoy.^[6]

Emily Sandoval – portrayed by Gwen Zamora, the main antagonist of the show. She is the scheming wife of Francis who will do whatever it takes to stop her husband from being reunited with Agnes and Binoy.^[7]

Len-Len de Guzman – portrayed by Angel Satsumi, an honor student. Studious and diligent, Len-Len initially sees Binoy as a rival in Teacher Josie's class. But she and Binoy will eventually become friends.^[8]

Bibot – short for "Binoy's robot", an old and discarded robot that Binoy repaired and become his entry in the school's science fair project. Bibot's artificial intelligence is not perfect; he is incapable of emotion, speaks in a robotic voice and interprets most commands literally. Occasionally, Bibot had rare abilities that seemed to only appear in two or three episodes, such the ability to jump, speak in three different languages (English, Tagalog or the combination of the two, and Chinese) and displayed of holographic screen.

Numerous supporting characters were given expansive and recurring appearances in the progressive story line:

Alfredo Sandoval – portrayed by Lorenzo "Tata" Mara, the father of Francis and Jaime. He is a ruthless, strict, perfectionist and no-nonsense man who owns a multi-billion company. He never escaped the memories of his late wife, and he blames Francis for her death.

Teacher Josie – portrayed by Rich Asuncion, Binoy's adviser who eventually became an instrumental in discovering Binoy's intelligence. While strict and intimidating on the outside, Teacher Josie is a good person who feels genuine concern for the welfare of her students.^[9]

Lito de Guzman – portrayed by Ervic Vijandre, a school gardener who is very fond of children and the elder brother of Lenlen. He is Teacher Josie's love interest.^[10]^[11]

Jaime Sandoval – portrayed by Lucho Ayala, Francis' younger brother and confidant.^[12]

Celia de Guzman - portrayed by Sharmaine Arnaiz, Lenlen and Lito's bubbly mother. After seven years of being absent on her children's lives, Celia returns from Japan to be with them.

Sandy – portrayed by Frencheska Farr, Emily's equally mean cousin, confidant and sidekick. She is described as a social climber, outspoken, sarcastic and opinionated. Her inquisitive and outspoken nature and sarcastic jokes and advice often offended Emily.^[13]

Chairman Domeng – portrayed by Gene Padilla, a corrupt Barangay Chairman who has an unrequited love for Agnes. He is a widower with a son — Botchok.

Botchok – portrayed by Zyriel Jestre, the eight-year-old spoiled brat son of Chairman Domeng. Botchok is also portrayed as a fat, unintelligent bully who loves new toys and cool gadgets. He is mostly seen bullying Binoy and Lenlen.

Production and development

Screenwriter, Marlon Miguel conceptualized and developed the series on early 2013. The show's key target demographic were children (6-12 year old age) and preteens to adolescents (13-19 year old age), and aimed to entertain in a positive manner, at the same time, teach televiewers, especially the parents, to raise their kids to be the best they can be while highlighting the importance of maintaining a strong parental involvement in every child's learning and development. The series also dealt with several social issues such as single-parenting, bullying and peer-pressure.

The series featured six regular speaking roles. The majority of the cast were all announced in mid-2013 during the series' story conference, with the main cast being David Remo, Sheena Halili, Luis Alandy, Nova Villa, Angel Satsumi and Gwen Zamora. Remo portrayed the titular character Binoy Santos, a boy with a stunning IQ and a "big heart". He was chosen to play the character from more than fifty children who auditioned for the said role. Prior to this, the child actor had already appeared in several TV and print commercials. Halili was chosen to play another lead character, Agnes Santos, Binoy's illiterate mother. In an interview, Halili said she had no qualms accepting the project despite portraying a mother at only twenty-six years old. She described the role as her "most challenging ever" and pointed her mother as her "peg" for her character.^[14] Alandy, Villa and Zamora signed on to portray three equally-important characters in the series.

The production began in June 2013 and Quezon City was chosen as the filming location. The series premiered on July 22, 2013, on GMA Network's early primetime, 5:50 p.m. slot.

Reception

The show garnered both high ratings and positive feedback from viewers and critics, from its premiere telecast. According to data from the widely trusted ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement, the show dominated its time slot not only in Mega Manila but also in Urban Luzon. Urban Luzon and Mega Manila represent 76% and 59% of the total urban TV household population in the entire country, respectively. Based on July 22, 2013 overnight data, the program posted higher ratings against its counterpart with an average household rating of 14% versus Annaliza's 13%. Meanwhile, in Mega Manila, Binoy Henyo registered 14% against the competitor's 11.4%.^[15]
