Bingham is a market town in the Rushcliffe borough of Nottinghamshire, England. In November 2013, Bingham was named the best town in the country to raise a family.

Geography

With a population of around 9,000 people, it lies about nine miles east of Nottingham, a similar distance south-west of Newark-on-Trent and west of Grantham. It is situated where the A46 (the old Fosse Way) intersects the A52. Every Thursday Bingham holds a market in the centre of the town, there is also a farmers' market on the third Saturday of each month held in the Market Place.

  • Germany Wallenfels in Bavaria, Germany. In the past music groups have visited to and from the twinned towns, and a beer festival is held in Bingham every year.

History

Romans

The south east of Nottinghamshire traditionally formed the wapentake of Bingham. The Romans built a city at Joshy's House (Bingham) and a settlement at the river crossing at Ad Pontem (East Stoke) on the Fosse Way that joined Isca (Exeter) to Lindum (Lincoln).[1]

Bingham has expanded vastly since the 1950s with the majority of the housing being relatively new. Most of the more historic buildings (including the Church of St. Mary and All Saints, Bingham, the oldest) being in the centre. Approximately 500 houses are now being built bordering the A52 Grantham Road and the existing Mill Hill estate. There have been concerns that the 1000+ people who will move into these new houses will require more and improved services which so far the local councils are proving reluctant to provide, despite vast amounts of money being raised for the exchequer from the sale of the land to developers which was in public ownership.

Another 1000 houses are planned to be built as part of 'Future Bingham', North of the Railway line.[2]

The A46, to the west of the town, is currently being upgraded to grade-separated dual-carriageway, which will increase traffic flow on the road, travelling in a much safer environment. The Widmerpool-Newark Improvement has been diverted to the west of the former Roman town to preserve the archaeology.

Things to do

Bingham Leisure Centre has sports facilities and a swimming pool. The facilities are attached to Toot Hill School.

The Crown

There are also six public houses in the town :

  • The Horse and Plough
  • The Bingham (recently reopened as a Bar and Restaurant)
  • The Butter Cross Wetherspoons (Formerly 'The Crown')
  • The Chesterfield at Bingham.

Bingham has a very active Scout Group, comprising around 140 young people.

Education

There are four schools in Bingham: Robert Miles Infant school, Robert Miles Junior School,[3] Carnarvon Primary School[4] and the comprehensive Toot Hill School[5] Central College Nottingham also has a campus in the town.

Economy

Although Bingham is largely a Dormitory town for Nottingham, it does also have a number of thriving businesses and a busy town centre. The town has a shop vacancy rate of just 2% against an East Midlands average of 16%[6]*. There are 20 takeaways and/or places to eat, 11 Hairdressers/salons, 5 estate agents and 39 other retail outlets including a Sainsbury's, Cooperative Food, Boyes (opened 21 June 2013) and Boots the Chemists. Bingham also provides shopping, medical and other services to those living in the surrounding villages. Tesco Stores Limited have obtained planning permission to build a larger supermarket near the town centre, construction as not yet commenced.

To the north of the town, there is an industrial estate with approximately 40 businesses. The largest of these is GWIBS 24/7 a privately owned company employing over 50 people and working in Mechanical, Electrical and IT Services. Other major companies on the estate include Focus Label Machinery, Trent Designs, Xact, The Workplace Depot (who manufacture mobile safety steps, trucks and trolleys), and Water at Work. In 2012, The Workplace Depot[7] won a Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice.

Bingham Business Club[8] offers members the chance to meet and work together to generate revenue and help address the issues that face businesses in the area. They meet monthly and their website has a list of members, events and news.

In November 2013 Bingham was named as the best town in England and Wales in which to bring up a family.[9] The Family Investments Report cited factors such as excellent schools childcare provision, low crime and affordable housing.[10]

Television

Bingham was a location in Midlands film director Shane Meadows' film Twenty Four Seven, which contained scenes shot at Toot Hill top field, The Linear Walk and Bingham Boxing Club. Bingham has also been in two episodes of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet,[11] as well as some episodes of Crossroads, Woof! and Boon.

Robot Wars series 3, Jungle Run and scenes from Shane Meadows' 2006 film This is England were filmed nearby on the former RAF Newton site.

Notable incidents

At 02.45 GMT on Monday 6 February 2012 thieves used a tractor to steal the cash machines from the Natwest bank in the market square. The incident was featured on local and national news.[12][13] [14]

A woman from Bingham lies to Police about being sexually assaulted in a taxi cab.[15][16]

Trent Barton provide frequent and well used public bus service into Nottingham for commuters, shoppers and nightlife.[21] Bingham also has its own railway station which provides a less frequent service to Nottingham, Grantham & beyond.
