Big Spaceship is a Brooklyn-based digital creative agency that creates connected experiences, products and platforms. Founded in 2000, Big Spaceship’s culture and crew have been profiled by Harvard Business Review and recognized among Advertising Age’s “Best Places to Work in Marketing and Media” three years in a row. In 2011, Big Spaceship was named among Fast Company’s “Most Innovative Companies.”

Big Spaceship has worked with clients including Adobe, Chobani, Crayola, Google, YouTube, GE, HP, Shake Shack, and Wrigley, and has a growing IP portfolio including Corpsify, Pretty Loaded, Taco Finder and The Most Awesomest Thing Ever.

Background

Big Spaceship was launched during the dot-com bubble. During those years, interactive agencies emerged in response to demand for creative and marketing solutions for digital media,[1] which largely defied the existing marketing standards of print and broadcast media.

At the 2008 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, BBDO New York accepted several awards for The HBO Voyeur Project.[2] crediting Big Spaceship as a production company, despite the digital agency’s larger role in evolving the creative concept for interactive media. Big Spaceship CEO Michael Lebowitz responded by encouraging an open dialogue within the industry, advocating for appropriate or shared credit when agencies of different specialties collaborate.[3] That same year, Lebowitz co-founded the Society of Digital Agencies (SoDA).

Today, among a larger set of digital agencies, Big Spaceship differentiates itself through its collaborative process in both product and communications design.

Company Evolution

Big Spaceship was founded by Michael Lebowitz and Daniel Federman when the commercial internet was in its formative years. Much of its early work was done for the movie industry,[4] with Sony Pictures, Miramax Films and Paramount Pictures, among others. It has since transitioned to working with a wide variety of consumer brands providing web and product design, app development, brand consulting, and social media services. Since then, Big Spaceship has worked with clients such as Wrigley, Chobani, Star Wars, HP, GE, Google, YouTube, Adobe, Absolut, Shake Shack, Victoria’s Secret, and Crayola.

Business Practices

Big Spaceship’s structure was studied by Harvard Business School. The resulting case study, released in February 2009, posed the question of how Big Spaceship would continue to grow while maintaining the culture that has sustained its success.[5] This culture stems from its collaborative and interdisciplinary teams made of strategists, technologists, designers, and producers.

The agency’s creative process and emphasis on collaboration were also explored in a 2008 Lynda.com documentary “Creative Inspirations” and New York Times 2011 interview with CEO Michael Lebowitz.

Awards

The agency’s approach to content organization, design, and user experience has won numerous awards. These include a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for the agency’s work with HBO Voyeur, Cannes Lions, Clios and One Show Interactive Pencils, as well as various Webby, FWA, Communication Arts, W3 and Pixel Awards. In 2012, the Museum of the Moving Image chose to feature their Pretty Loaded as an ongoing exhibition. The agency was named one of the “World’s Leading Independent Agencies" in 2009 by thenetworkone and Campaign Magazine and “World’s Most Innovative Companies” in 2011 by Fast Company.

Their commitment to culture has brought them recognition as great place to work. In 2012, 2011, and 2010, they were listed as one of the Best Place to Work in Marketing & Media. In 2012, Crain’s NY recognized Big Spaceship as one of the Top 50 Best Places to Work in NYC.
