The Bia District has been further divided into Bia West and Bia East. Bia West still has its capital as Sefwi Essam. Bia East which was curved from Bia district has Sefwi Adabokrom as its capital. They are all in the western region of Ghana.

Bia West and Bia East were all curved from the then Bia District in 2012. Which was also curved out of the then Juaboso-Bia District in 2004 by an Act of Parliament through a Legislative Instrument and is the highest Administrative and Political authority within its sphere of influence and jurisdiction. It has Essam as its capital.

The two districts (Bia West and Bia East) shares borders with Dormaa Municipal in the North, Asunafo North Municipal to the East (all in the Brong Ahafo Region), Juaboso district to the south eastern border and La Cote d’lvoire to the west.

The District serves as entry/exit point between La Cote d’lvoire and the republic of Ghana.
