Bhattmewada Brahmins

Bhattmewada Brahmins are a Brahmin community found in the state of [Rajasthan]] in India.

Origin

They are believed to have originated from Mewar, in Rajasthan. Their history dates back to the Mahabharata period. Most of the Bhattmewada Brahmins lived in region near current Udaipur and Eklingji temple.[1]

When the grandson of Pandvas, Raja Parikshit attacked the area near Udaipur, many fled to nearby areas and went into the jungles of current Dungarpur city and on the borders of Rajasthan and Gujarat. It is believed during the Mughal rule (1500–1600) A.D a large section of this group were at odds with the Mughal rule which they opposed. Most of them migrated to Dungarpur district in South Rajasthan, mainly in the Village Kanba and Northern part of Gujarat (State South of Rajasthan) and settled in Sabarkantha, Banaskantha, Ahmedabad, Baroda and Bombay.
