About

Bert Rodriguez is a Los Angeles based artist from Miami. A member of the now L.A.- based OHWOW arts collective and community and a winner of a Frieze Foundation Commission. His work has been displayed in the 2008 Whitney Biennial. Rodriguez graduated from New World School of the Arts BFA program in 1998.[1]

Rodriguez works in a variety of media including: film, video, photography, sculpture, installation and sound.[2] He relies heavily on process and performance. He uses various methods to translate his ideas, which explore the relationship existing between art and audience.[3]

Work

Bert Rodriguez was in the 2008 Whitney Biennial. His piece involved giving free therapeutic sessions inside a large white cube installed in the middle of an ornate room and assigning "patients" artwork projects as remedies for their problems. A muffled version of these discussions audible outside his "office" suggests a ghostlike presence that reflects and intensifies the Armory's haunting ambience. Operating largely outside traditional commercial art practices, and with shrewd yet playful wit, Rodriguez's multifarious practice educates, amuses, perplexes and enriches his audience while quietly commenting on the contemporary art world.[3] Rodriguez featured a performance-based installation at the Frieze Foundation Art Fair. The installation consisted of a massage station coated in a centralized, highly trafficked area of fair. At certain times for the duration of the fair, the artist was available to perform a ten minute foot massage for any weary visitors walking through.[2] In 2010, Rodriguez posed on the cover of Miami New Times, recreating the same overshoot of W Magazine's: Art Issue with Kim Kardashian. The cover photo was shot by Mark Seliger, the same photographer of Kardashian's original cover. The photos soon became viral.[4]

Documentary

Wet Heat Project shot a full-length documentary based on Bert Rodriguez. The movie is due for release in 2014. The documentary covers Rodriguez's life as a conceptual artist, and features various artists such as, Marina Abramović.[5]
