Berkeley is a village located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. Incorporated in 1924, the population at the 2010 census was 5,209.[1]
The town has a commuter railroad station on Metra's Union Pacific/West Line with service to downtown Chicago.
Geography
Berkeley is located at 41°53′12″N 87°54′38″W / 41.88667°N 87.91056°W (41.886794, -87.910528).[2]
According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 1.40 square miles (3.6 km2), all land.[3]
Demographics
As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 5,245 people, 1,877 households, and 1,387 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,765.4 people per square mile (1,456.9/km²). There were 1,914 housing units at an average density of 1,374.1 per square mile (531.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 59.37% White, 27.74% African American, 0.11% Native American, 3.85% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 6.75% from other races, and 2.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.52% of the population.
There were 1,877 households out of which 33.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% were married couples living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.1% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.27.
In the village the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $58,984, and the median income for a family was $67,478. Males had a median income of $40,568 versus $31,370 for females. The per capita income for the village was $24,334. About 4.7% of families and 6.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.6% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
Education
Most children in Berkeley attend schools in District 87 which are Sunnyside Elementary School, and MacArthur Middle School. Others attend Hillside School in Hillside District 93. High school students go on to attend Proviso West High School located in Hillside and is part of Proviso Township High School District 209.
Private school education is available in the Berkeley area with St. Domitilla Elementary, and Immanuel Lutheran grade schools in Hillside, and Immaculate Conception, and Visitation grade schools in neighboring Elmhurst. High school age students have several schools to choose from in the Berkeley area including St. Joseph High School in neighboring Westchester, Immaculate Conception High School in Elmhurst, and Nazareth Academy in LaGrange Park. Timothy Christian school in Elmhurst is also an option and has students from K through 12.
