Belinda Peregrín Schüll (born August 15, 1989 in Madrid, Spain), better known as Belinda Peregrín or simply Belinda, is a Spanish-born Mexican singer-songwriter and actress. She started her career in 2000 at the age of 10 when she was cast in the lead role in the children's telenovela ¡Amigos X Siempre!. She later appeared in other children's programs Aventuras en el Tiempo and Cómplices Al Rescate and participated in their subsequent soundtrack releases and international tours.[1]

In 2003, her debut self-titled album Belinda was a commercial success throughout Latin America, and sold over 2.5 million records worldwide.[1] The album spawned the number one singles "Ángel" and "Vivir". In 2006, her second album Utopía earned her two Latin Grammy Awards nominations and was certified platinum in Mexico.[2] It contained the top ten singles "Ni Freud Ni Tu Mamá", "Bella Traición" and "Luz Sin Gravedad".[3]

Collectively, her four studio albums have sold more than 12 million copies worldwide. [4] With more than 2 million albums sold in the United States, Belinda is the third best selling female Mexican artist in the United States, behind Thalía and Paulina Rubio. [5]

Early life

Belinda was born August 15, 1989 in Madrid, Spain to Spanish father, José Ignacio Peregrín Gutiérrez. Her mother, Belinda Schüll Moreno, who was born in France, is half-Spanish and half-French. She has a younger brother named Ignacio. Her father owned several factories in Mexico. The family moved to Mexico City permanently when Belinda was four years old.[6][7] Her maternal grandfather was the famous late French bullfighter, Pierre Schüll.

200002: Telenovela and soundtrack appearances

At a very early age she showed an incredible talent for singing, acting and making home videos which she wrote and shot. When Belinda was ten she was cast in her first televovela ¡Amigos x Siempre!, produced by Televisa in Mexico. She was featured in the soundtrack of the same name. Both the show and the album became a huge success in Latin America. In 2001 she starred in her second telenovela named Aventuras en el Tiempo, also produced by Televisa. The series achieved success in Mexico and many countries of Latin America. She contributed to the series soundtracks. Belinda gained recognition playing the characters of twins in Cómplices Al Rescate. She toured with the cast in many countries in Latin America with over 160 live shows.[8] She recorded two soundtracks for the series and received her first Latin Grammy nomination for her work on one of the soundtracks. Belinda did not return for the series' second season.

200305: Belinda releases and commercial success

Her international self-titled debut studio album Belinda was released in Mexico by Sony BMG and RCA Records on August 5, 2003. The album became a great success in Mexico and throughout Latin America; selling over 2.5 million copies worldwide.[9] The album was produced by Rudy Pérez, Graeme Pleeth, Mauri Stern and Robin Barter.[10] Six singles were released, including a number of top ten singles: "Lo Siento", "Boba Niña Nice", "Ángel" and "Vivir" which was chosen as the main theme song for Corazones al límite, a soap opera which she briefly appeared in. The album itself was re-released multiple times throughout 2004 and 2005.

In early 2005 she collaborated with Mexican rock band Moderatto on a cover by Timbiriche titled "Muriendo Lento" which peaked number one in Mexico and was a commercial success.

200608: Crossover, The Cheetah Girls 2 and Utopía

In 2006, Belinda debuted in the North American markets in the Disney Channel Original Movie The Cheetah Girls 2 as Marisol. The movie premiered on August 25, 2006 with a total of over 8.1 million viewers, one of the highest rated television films the network has released.[11] Belinda also contributed a total of four songs to Soundtrack, which was released on August 15, 2006 and debuted at number five on the Billboard 200[12] and sold 1.4 million copies to date in the US.[13]

Her second studio album Utopía was released in late 2006 and peaked at number three on the Mexican Charts, selling over 1 million records worldwide; and included the hit single "Ni Freud Ni Tu Mamá" (2006).[14] Belinda revealed that her label wanted her to spend one week in Los Angeles for the recording of Utopía 2 an English CD/DVD re-release for European and North American countries.[15] She also appeared as a guest star in Buscando a Timbiriche, La Nueva Banda. On October 18, 2007, Belinda won two awards, "Video of the Year" for "Bella Traición" and "Best Solo Artist" at the MTV Video Music Awards Latinoamerica. Belinda was also nominated in two categories in the 2007 Latin Grammy Awards held on November 8. Her nominations included "Song of the Year" for "Bella Traición" and "Best Female Pop Album" for her hit album, Utopía.

Belinda provided vocals for the Spanglish remix of "Te Quiero" by DJ Flex and Finley's 2008 single Your Hero.

200910: Return to Mexican television and Carpe Diem

In 2009, she starred alongside Alfonso Herrera and Edith Gonzalez in the action themed telenovela, Camaleones. On August 27, 2009, EMI Televisa posted a video teaser of Belinda's new song "Sal de Mi Piel", originally announced as the lead single of her yet untitled third studio album; It was then selected as the main themed of Camaleones. In 2010 Belinda guest starred on the third season of Mujeres Asesinas, starring in the episode "Anette and Anne, noble", based on the story of the painter Sofia Bassi, in which she shared credits with Issabella Camil and William Levy. She also recorded the song "Contigo en la distancia" for one of the scenes of the episode, the episode and song were praised by critics; the episode was one of the series highest rated.

In February and March 2010 she was featured in collaboration with several Latin artists in "Somos el Mundo" and "Ay Haiti". Both songs were released as charity singles for benefits.

Carpe Diem, Belinda's third studio album, was released on March 23, 2010. Two days after its release, the album was certified gold in Mexico, after 40,000 copies were sold.[16] The lead single of the record Egoísta featuring Pitbull was released to commercial success; A shift from her prominent pop-rock genre to more dance oriented.[17] The album's second and final single is "Dopamina" was released in 2011 to moderate success.[18] The video for Dopamina was released on February 2, 2011.[19] Belinda also stated on her Facebook that she is was putting the final touches on her next two videos for the tracks; Gaia and Amor Transgénico[20] which were never released.

2011present: Catarsis

Belinda announced in her Twitter that she would dedicate 2011 and 2012 to write and record for her new album. On June 5, 2012, "En El Amor Hay Que Perdonar" was confirmed as the album's lead single. It was officially released for digital download on June 19, 2012. On July 21, 5 new tracks from the album were leaked online, including next single "I Love You (Te Quiero)" featuring Pitbull alongside "Bailaría Sobre El Fuego", "Litost", "Aguardiente", "Como Si Fuéramos Novios", "Dame Mas", and "Con Los Ojos Cerrado".[21]

"En El Amor Hay Que Perdonar" debuted at number seven on the Mexican Singles Chart and peaked at number one, and stayed for one week.[22] The second single, "Te Voy A Esperar" (which features Juan Magan), for the soundtrack of the film Las aventuras de Tadeo Jones was digitally released in Spain, debuting and staying at number one for eleven weeks, receiving the Platinum certification by PROMUSICAE for sales of over 40,000.[23] In Mexico, "Te Voy A Esperar" was only released for airplay and peaked at number seven.[23][24] Catarsis was originally scheduled to be released on September 25, 2012. However, it was pushed back and will be released on June 2013.[25]

"En la Obscuridad" was the third single. It debuted at number 37 on the Mexican Singles Chart, peaking at number 10, in March 2013. It had an international impact for Belinda's career, peaking at number 39 in Spain and at number 65 in South Korea.[23][26]

On Billboard "En La Obscuridad" peaked at number 9 on Latin Pop Songs, making the highest peak for her career on the US. On February 21, her official video for "En La Obscuridad" was released and featured on the site's homepage, which boosted the video past 8 million total views in just one week. With just 2 days, the video broke the Latin record on VEVO, with more than 3 million views.[27] The exposure caused a 153% growth in weekly fan acquisition with the addition of 5,000 new Facebook fans (up 17%) and 211,000 new Twitter followers. The video's popularity contributed to over 12 million plays to her channel for the week of the release(up 32%) and the overall exposure contributed to 16% rise in weekly visits to her Wikipedia page. Belinda debuted at 15 on the Social 50 chart.[28] The music video has over 100 million views on VEVO.[29]
