"Beautiful" (Korean: "아름다워") is a song performed by South Korean boy group Shinee. It was included as a track in their third Korean studio album Chapter 1. Dream Girl – The Misconceptions of You, released on February 19, 2013. The song was also chosen as one of the three promotional singles from the album, other two being "Aside" and the title track "Dream Girl".

Production

"Beautiful" was written and produced by a team of composers that included Andrew Choi, Richard Garcia, Cha Yong-un, as well as Teddy Riley, who had established ties with S.M. Entertainment after producing Girls' Generation's "The Boys" and Exo's "What Is Love" among many other songs. The lyrics were penned by Cha Yong-un along with Shinee's resident rapper Choi Minho whol also provided the lyrics for rap parts of five other songs in the album. The accompanying choreography of "Beautiful" and "Dream Girl" from the album was handled by renowned American choreographer, Tony Testa, who previously worked with Shinee on Sherlock.

Reception

Billboard K-pop columnist Jeff Benjamin wrote that "the album is a triumph that never lacks in energy and balances nods to 80s pop stars and forward-thinking pop" and that "tracks like "Beautiful" and "Runaway" combine unique electronic production elements over sugary boy band harmonies to create year-round pop music".[1]

A columnist from Seoulbeats considered "Beautiful" as his favorite and one of the two best songs on the album along with "Dynamite". "...“Beautiful” is just as its name states; the vocals are gorgeously soft and glide smoothly atop the instrumental without sinking into it, something which is a constant worry in “Dream Girl”..."[2]

Promotion

Shinee's first performance of "Beautiful" was on their 'Dream Girl' comeback showcase that was streamed live through Naver music on February 23, 2013 along with performances of "Aside" and "Dream Girl".[3] The song was later performed as a promotional single along with "Dream Girl" on various music and variety shows including Music Bank, Inkigayo, Music Core, M! Countdown and Show Champion.
