Beach Run is a sport that is based in races on beach sand. These races have distances of 1 km, 2 km, 20 km, half marathon, 20 miles, Marathon, Ultramarathon...

History

The origin of Beach Run is in the Beach Run competitions of the 1960's Easter Beach Run at Daytona (Florida), Annual Seaside Beach Run in the city of Seaside (Oregon) and the Gurnet Classic Beach Run at Duxbury, (Massachusetts).[1][2]

Bill Rodgers and Alberto Salazar competed in The Gurnet Classic.[3][4]

International Federation

Today, Beach Run on non-compact sand as a sport in the International Life Saving Federation (ILS), with distances of 1 or 2 km.[5]

In 2012, for example, the International Life Saving Federation held specifically a World Championship of Beach Run at the distance of 2 km, inside their World Championships.[6]

Also, other international championships of the national federations of the International Life Saving Federation (Australia, New Zealand) have Beach Run with the same distances.

International Olympic Committee

On the occasion of the 105th session of the International Olympic Committee in Atlanta from 15 to 18 July 1996, the International Life Saving Federation, with its different sports specialties,[7] are recognized by the International Olympic Committee.[8]

Great distances

Other competitions of Beach Run on non-compact sand with great distances (20 km - 24 hours) are the following: 20 km Beach Run, Hermosa 24 Ultramarathon...[9]

World Records

There are world records in some Beach Run distances, both distances of Lifesaving Federation (1 km or 2 km) and great distances (20 km - 24 hours).[10]

Other competitions

In 2011, a private initiative created in USA a World Championships of compact sand Beach Run, admitted in the calendar of the USATF (USA Track & Field), the Athletics Federation of USA.[11]
