Basic Element (Russian: Базовый элемент, /Bázovyi elyemyént/, or simply “Базэл”) is a diversified investment company founded in 1997 and owned by Oleg Deripaska. It is based in Moscow, Russia.[1]

Overview

Basic Element's main assets are concentrated in five economic sectors - Energy, Manufacturing, Financial Services, Construction and Aviation.[2]

About 250,000 people work at the Group's companies in Russia, the CIS, Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe and Latin America.[2]

In 2007 the company's revenues were $26.8 bln, growing 45% relative to the previous year. It had $45 bln worth of assets.[3]

Operations

Energy sector

En+ Group is Russia-based diversified mining, metals and energy group. En+ Group holds:[4]

  • 47.41% stake in alumina and aluminium producer UC RUSAL
  • 100% stake in EuroSibEnergo PLC power company
  • a 100% in Strikeforce Mining and Resources Ltd (SMR) (ferromolybdenum producer)
  • a 100% in En+ Downstream (includes aluminium downstream assets)
  • a 100% in En+ Coal
  • Central European Aluminium Company (CEAC) which has run the Kombinat Aluminijuma Podgorica (KAP) aluminum smelter in Montenegro - and the Rudnic Boxita Niksic bauxite mine, which supplies raw materials for the smelter, since 2005.
  • Dmitrov Pilot Plant for Aluminium Canning Tape (DOZAKL) strip with a polished surface for the manufacture of lamplight reflectors and lath ceilings.

Manufacturing sector

The Russian Machines corporation was established in 2005 to unite Basic Element's Manufacturing Sector assets.[4]

Russian Machines is a diversified corporation, with industrial and engineering assets in the following sectors:

  • automotive (GAZ Group),
  • automobile components (RM Systems),
  • railway engineering (OJSC RCTM, Republic of Mordovia; and the Abakanvagonmash plant, Abakan, Republic of Khakassia),
  • aircraft building (Aviakor),
  • road construction machinery (GAZ Group),
  • equipment for the armed forces (Military Industrial Company).

Aviation sector

Basel Aero - the operating company for the Sochi, Krasnodar, Gelendzhik, Yeysk and Anapa airports.

According to the press Basel operates Harkiv Airport.[5]

Airlines

Basel owns OJSC Kuban Airlines - the Krasnodar territory's passenger carrier, linking the region with Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and other Russian and foreign airports.

In July 2010 Basel revealed its intention to buy Russia’s low-cost airline Sky Express (Скай Экспресс).[6] In May 2011, Denis Ilyin, head of Basel’s aviation business, became the Sky Express’ CEO.[7]

Tourism services in Russia

OJSC Kuban Territorial Air Communications Agency (TAVS Kuban)[8] operates in ticket sales services, organization of tourist flights and freight traffic, as well as taxi services at Basel Aero airports.
