Bashir Hameed (born James D. York on December 1, 1940; died August 30, 2008[1]) was a member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army. Hameed was convicted of the murder of New York City police officer John Scarangella, and the attempted murder of Scarangella's partner, Officer Richard Rainey. Officer Scarangella was murdered on 16 April 1981, after he and his partner pulled over a van carrying Hameed and Abdul Majid, then known as Anthony LaBorde. Hameed and his co-defendant were both convicted of murder, and Hameed was given a sentence of 25 years to life. He died while serving this sentence at the Great Meadow Correctional Facility in Comstock, New York.

Some leftist political activists have claimed that Hameed was a political prisoner.
