The Barnstable Police Department (BPD) has the primary responsibility for law enforcement and investigation within the city of Barnstable, Massachusetts and all the villages within it, including the major villages of Barnstable, Hyannis, Marstons Mills, Cotuit, Centerville, Osterville and West Barnstable.
In addition to the patrol and the detective unit, there are other specialty units including; Honor Guard, K-9, Marine Unit, Motorcycle, Mountain Bike, SWAT, Traffic
Honor Guard
K-9 The BPD K-9 unit has 3 teams. The two Sheppard teams are "patrol dogs." The other dog is specifically trained for narcotics detection.
Marine Unit The marine unit has three vessels. The boats are operated mainly in the summer season and patrol both the north side of the town in Barnstable Harbor and along Sandy Neck Barrier Beach as well as on the south side of the town in Lewis Bay, North Bay, West Bay and Cotuit Bay. The department also conducts regular patrols on Lake Wequaquet.
Motorcycle The Motorcycle unit is primarily used to augment and offset the patrol unit in the summer season and it is used at special events.
Mountain Bike This unit is one of the most active Mountain Bike units on all of Cape Cod. It is used as a community policing tool. The unit utilizes a variety of major brand mountain bikes.
Traffic The traffic unit's major functions are accident responding, reporting, and reconstruction.
