Campus
Old Mill Lane
The original Old Mill Lane A Block has now been demolished with classes being relocated to the B block or one of the other various college sites. The area is currently undergoing a complete transformation with the construction of a new multi million pound building to replace both A and B block. This is due for completion in June 2011, with the final stage being the demolition of B block to make way for a landscaped garden area. The subjects that will be taught in the new Old Mill Lane site will generally be for the vocational qualifications.
Eastgate House
Officially opened by Jeff Ennis, this has now been rebranded as the Barnsley Sixth Form College where the majority of A Level subjects are taught, examples include English, Geography, Business & Social Sciences. There are plans to replace this building by 2016.
The SciTech Centre
Opened by Sir Patrick Stewart in November 2004, and houses the Business, Science and Computing departments. A Levels are also taught here if they involve science or computing. ICT shares rooms with computing. Maths was also taught in this building up until the 2011-2012 academic year, when it was swapped with psychology, formerly in the Eastgate house. The work of Liam Walton and Sarah Gott this year has encouraged the re relocation of maths back to the Scitech centre.
Honeywell Centre
Has specialist facilities for Arts, Music and Music Technology, Sports and Physical Education and Public Services. Some examinations are also held here. It also has a brand new sports hall and physical education block built which opened in early 2009.
Lifelong Learning Network
Barnsley College is a partner institution of Higher Futures, the Lifelong Learning Networks (LLN) for South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire.
History: Incorporation
The 1990s Incorporation of colleges brought radical changes in management style led by David Eade. Franchising on a large scale brought new funds but ultimately in 2001 financial collapse and 100+ staff redundancies (Hansard 21 Jun 2001: Column 226 Link) as the leadership failed to respond to changes in the funding arrangements (opinion). Stuart Spacey served a prison sentence for fraud as a consequence of actions in this period (Serious Fraud Office press release 19 April 2007 SFO).
