History

Barisal Zilla School is one of the best schools across the country and is the first high school founded in Barisal Division. Mainly the historical Barisal Zilla School was founded by Mr. N.W. Garret on December 23, 1829 with only 8 students. The then name of the school was "Barisal English School". The first Headmaster of this school was Mr. John Smith and the first Headmaster from Bengal was Babu Tanuram Lahiri (বাবু তনুরাম লাহিড়ী). From 1853 to 1891 this school was directed under Government management as "Barisal Zilla School". In 1891 it was declared as a Non-Government school and was renamed 'Barisal English School'. In 1906 it was once again brought under govt. management and once again got the name "Barisal Zilla School". At that time, the school building was in the land of Mr. Lucas right at the west side of the Protestant church. As the then Bengal Governor opined the school as an unhygienic one, Mr. Barton founded the current school building. In 1991 the school started two shifts : morning & day. Currently it is regarded as the best school of the south-east region of Bangladesh. The present Headmaster of this school is Sabina Yesmin.
