Bangla house

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bangla house (Bengali: বাংলা ঘর) is the name of a type of guest house typically found in South Asia, especially in Bengal.

Usually it is a separate detached house with one or two rooms in front a person's home which may have more than four rooms. It is especially found in the countryside where there is a lack of hotels.

Contrasted with guest houses found in other parts of the world, Bengali culture proscribes that traveling guests live free-of-charge in a private person's home (in the Bengal house). Guests are kept in a separate detached house because of cultural modesty and privacy.

The zamindar family of Teota maintained a famous "Bangla house" called the atithi-sala [1] Muhammad Mohsin, a famous philanthropist also set up many guest houses for the traveling poor.[2]
