Balkh University (Pashto: د بلخ پوهنتون) (Persian: پوهنتونی بلخ) is a university located in Mazari Sharif, capital of Balkh Province in northern Afghanistan. Established in 1986, the university has about 5,500 students and is the third largest in Afghanistan after Kabul University and Nangarhar University. Faculties include medicine, engineering, economics, journalism, literature, law and science.[2][3]
As part of its contributions to the rebuilding of Afghanistan, the Government of Pakistan is expanding the university by adding the Liaquat Ali Khan engineering faculty, a 10 million dollar separate block which is near completion as of 2012.[4]
