Balichak is a census town in Paschim Medinipur district in the state of West Bengal, India.

Geography

Balichak is located at 22°22′N 87°33′E / 22.37°N 87.55°E / 22.37; 87.55.[1] It has an average elevation of 12 metres (42 feet). It is located in the Debra community development block in the Kharagpur subdivision of the Paschim Medinipur district.[2] The Debra police station serve this town.[2] Balichak is the headquarters of the Debra CD Block.[3]

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[4] Balichak had a population of 12,206. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Balichak has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 55% of the males and 45% of females literate. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Transportation

Balichak is well connected by roads/highways to other important towns of South Bengal including Medinipur (38 km) and Kharagpur (34 km). This town is served by Balichak railway station. Other regular transport services like Private & Govt. Public transport Bus, Rented Car service are also available in Balichak. Locals use bicycles and motorbikes for transportation within the town. Rickshaws are also available here.


Education

There are five schools at Balichak. Schools of Balichak town are Balichak Bhajahari Institution, Balichak Girls High School, Antala Sitala High School, Jhanjia G C High School, Brahmansasan High School, and Duan Rudreshwar High School. Debra Thana Sahid Kshudiram Smriti Mahavidyalaya is at the border of Balichak.

Health

There are three nursing homes in Balichak. People of Balichak and its nearest areas mainly depend on those.

Culture

The regular Bengali festivals like Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja and Kali Puja, Laxmi puja are well attended. Other common pujas in the worship of Sitala, Holi, Jagaddhatri Puja, Rath Yatra, Dussera(Ravan Pora) and Balichak Utsab also takes place.

Economy

The main economy is dependent on agriculture. A major sector of economy is also dependent on business.

The main agricultural products is rice . A few of the percentage of the people are government employees, School Teachers and employed in other small private sectors. The financial status of most of the people is in middle class and lower middle class category.
