Bae, also often spelled Pae or Pai, is a unique Korean family name. The South Korean census of 2000 found 372,064 people by this surname, or slightly less than 1% of the population.

The hanja listed to the right is the most common form. There are also 'Bae' without the stem on top (裴), though they were actually variants of each other. The common question when two people of Bae family name meet is, "Does your pear (in Korean also pronounced 'Bae') have a stem or not?"
