Badshahi Ashurkhana (Urdu: بادشاہی عاشور خانہ) is a mourning place for shias during the festival of Moharram near Charminar in Hyderabad, India. It is a house of mourning constructed in memory of martyrdom of Imam Hussain.[1][2]

It is now classified as a heritage site and is looked after by the state Department of Archaeology and Museums.[3]

History

It was built by Muhammed Quli Qutb Shah in 1594, three years after building the Charminar.

The Monument

Ashurkhana has two areas like the Niyaz Khana (offering place) and Naqaar Khana (drums place).[4] The Ashur Khana stands today with enamel tiles that have retained their lustre and vibrant colours even after four centuries. The intricate design in hexagons is exquisite.
