Babek (ballet)

Babek (Azerbaijani: Babək) – is a ballet in two actions, dedicated to people’s liberation struggle against foreign conguerors under the guidance of Babek. Music of the ballet is composed by Agshin Alizadeh. Rafiga Akhundova and Magsud Mammadov are the authors of a libretto.

A premiere of the ballet was held on May 20, 2986 in V.I.Lenin Palace[1] (now Heydar Aliyev Palace). Membership of Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after Mirza Fatali Akhundov staged the performance. Vitaliy Akhundov,[1] laureate of the All-Union contest, acted at a main part of the premiere. Four performances were staged at the palace and later the ballet was staged at Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater.

The composer of the opera said that, it was the composition he was born and lived for:

"Babek" is my whole life. I applied much effort into this ballet. When I was working on this ballet, I felt myself like a gladiator. I wrote this composition in the matter of 10 years.[2]
