Design
Compared with its N73 naturally-aspirated predecessor, the N74 features twin-turbochargers. The N74 was the first turbocharged BMW engine to feature variable valve lift and variable valve timing.[citation needed]
The engine marked BMW's first use of an 8-speed automatic transmission (the ZF 8HP90).[1]
