BFM 89.9 is Malaysia's only independent radio station, focusing on business news and current affairs. BFM's purpose is to build a better Malaysia by championing rational, evidence-based discourse as a key element of good policy decisions.
BFM 89.9 is a recent addition to Malaysia's FM radio landscape. It first went on-air on 4 September 2008 and professes to be Malaysia's first business radio station.[1]
Despite its tagline of "The Business Station", the station offers a mix of business and non-business programming. Its business programmes include international and local business news headlines, stock market reports and interviews with corporate personalities and start-ups. Its non-business programming includes interviews with protagonists on personal and professional development, health, and the arts.
In August 2009, BFM made its foray into sports programming by launching live Premier League football games on radio.[2] BFM is also getting recognition for the adult-oriented rock genre music that it plays during non talk-programming segments, a genre which is apparently not covered by incumbent radio stations. It also does play Malay songs from 12 am to 6 am everyday.
Notable international corporate personalities that have been interviewed by BFM includes Sir Martin Sorrell, Jim Rogers and management authors such as Jack Trout, Al Ries and Robert Kiyosaki. Local corporate personalities interviewed include Tony Fernandes (CEO of AirAsia), Idris Jala (former CEO of Malaysia Airlines) and Johan Dennelind (CEO of Digi Telecommunications). BFM has also interviewed various notable academics such as Joseph Stiglitz.[3]
The station can be received on 89.9 MHz in greater Kuala Lumpur metropolitan area (popularly known as the Klang Valley). BFM 89.9 covers in Klang Valley, Perak (Tapah, Bidor, Sungkai, Trolak, Slim River, Tanjung Malim, Teluk Intan, Bagan Datoh, Langkap, Hutan Melintang, Chenderiang, Manjung and parts of Perak Tengah), West Pahang (Kuala Lipis, Raub, Temerloh, Padang Tengku, Lanchang, Mentakab, Bera, Triang, Karak, Dong, Benta, Lurah Bilut, Sungai Ruan, Sungai Koyan, Sega, Fraser Hill, Genting Highlands, Maran, Jengka and Chenor) and parts of Negeri Sembilan (Nilai, Mantin, Lenggeng, Simpang Durian, parts of Rembau/Seremban/Port Dickson/Kuala Pilah/Jelebu/Jempol) and parts of Malacca (Masjid Tanah) on 89.9 MHz. As of September 2009, BFM offers live talk programming between 6 am and 9 pm weekdays, and during its live Premier League football games during weekends.
