Alonzo Butler (born October 30, 1979, in Nashville, Tennessee ) is an American heavyweight boxer.
Massive 6' 3" 250 pound "Big Zo" Butler started boxing in 1997. He had only a few amateur fights, 13 fights by his own count (Source:The Sweet Science), and played football and wrestled in high school.
In 2000, he turned pro and won 26 fights, with one draw, and one no-contest against relatively weak opposition. He was given little ink by the media, who criticized his professional record as being inflated.
Butler had a bizarre ESPN debut when he hurt his last-minute substitute opponent, Terry Porter by charging him, and them body slamming Porter, launching him through the ropes and onto a ringside table. It should have been ruled No contest, but Butler was somehow awarded a "TKO", which prompted ridicule by the Ring Magazine afterwards.
He has a renowned coach in his corner, Ace Miller, who has co-trained Evander Holyfield. In 2006, he signed with Art Pelullo's Banner Promotions.
Detached Retina and First Loss
In December 2007, Butler was scheduled to fight Dominick Guinn, but pulled out on short notice after incurring a detached left retina in training. The eye was surgically repaired. On June 20, 2008, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Butler's attempt at a comeback after eye surgery failed when he was decked in the fourth round and outpointed by a close ten-round decision by world class heavyweight Friday Ahunanya of Nigeria. His repaired left eye completely closed by round five due to Ahunanya's right-hand leads, Butler was an easy target for Ahunanya from that point on. Ahunanya had 20 bouts experience in Las Vegas against main event opposition to Butler's one. Ahunanya beat opponents with combined records of 46-0-1 in his last two bouts, and Butler-with thirteen months of inactivity and being 15 pounds over his usual fighting weight, and not having enough time to recover from the serious eye injury suffered his first loss.
Comeback after First Loss
Butler made a comeback on August 7, 2009 against Douglas Robertson who he dispatched in 2 minutes and 39 seconds of the first round. Butler weighed in at 253 lbs for this fight. In May 2011 he was edged out by Travis Walker.
