Alan Gilbert Merten (born December 27, 1941)^[1] was the President of George Mason University.

Biography

Merten received an undergraduate degree in mathematics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, a masters in Computer science from Stanford University, and a PhD in Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He began his academic career as an engineering professor at the University of Michigan, later became the dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Florida, and served as the dean of the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University until elected president of George Mason University in 1996, where he continued a long tradition of real estate investment on behalf of the university.^[2]

In a March 23, 2011 letter to the George Mason University community, Dr. Merten announced he will step down from the position of president effective June 30, 2012.

President Merten is married to Sally Merten, and they have two children and four grandsons.^[2]
