Dato' Sri Ahmad Shabery Cheek is a Malaysian politician. He is the Minister of Communication and Multimedia in the Barisan Nasional coalition government, and sits in Parliament as the member for Kemaman, Terengganu. He represents the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO).[1] He was elected to the Supreme Council of UMNO in 2009.

Early life and education

Dato' Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek was born in Kijal, Kemaman, Terengganu, on December 10, 1958, and received his early education at Sekolah Sungai Lembing and Sekolah Datuk Abdul Razak in Seremban.

In 1983, Dato' Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek pursued a course in economics at Universiti Malaya. In 1986 he obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. In 1989 he obtained a postgraduate diploma in International Relations from the Uppsala University in Sweden. That same year, Dato Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek was appointed the Secretary of the Malaysian Social Science Association (PSSM).

In 1990 Dato Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek was appointed Lecturer at the Universiti Malaya's Faculty of Economics and Administration and also served as a Research Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore.

Political career

Although he left UMNO in 1989 to join Semangat 46, Dato Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek rejoined UMNO in 1996, together with the majority of the Semangat 46 party after its dissolution.

In 2001, he was elected Deputy Chief of the UMNO Kemanan Division and in 2005, he was elected Member of Parliament for Kemaman in Terengganu.In addition, Dato Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek also served as:

  • Member of the Public Accounts Committee (2004–2006)
  • Member of Parliamentary Select Committee on Unity and National Service (2004–2006)
  • Member of UMNO National Information Bureau
  • Information Chief of UMNO Terengganu
  • Member of the Board of Kolej Universiti TATI (2004–2008)
  • Member of the Board of Yayasan Pembangunan Keluarga Terengganu (2004–2008)
  • Council Member of Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (2004–2008)
  • Parliamentary Secretary in Foreign MinistryAfter the 2008 general election which saw the incumbent Information Minister Tan Sri Zainuddin Maidin lose his parliamentary seat, then Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi appointed Ahmad Shabery as Information Minister in his reshuffled Cabinet.[2] When he was in this position, he joined in a spirited debate against the opposition de facto leader Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim which was broadcast live across the country.

In April 2009, current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak appointed him as the Minister for Youth and Sports.[3] He had previously served as Parliamentary Secretary in the Foreign Ministry.[4][5]

As Minister of Youth and Sports YB. Dato' Sri Ahmad Shabery Cheek did several changes to the "concept" in organizing the Ministry's programmes, including in Hari Belia Negara 2010, which saw a large youth turnout. With tagline of "Seribu Peluang, Sejuta Keriangan", more than 250,000 youths gathered in Putrajaya and various youth organizations conducted 88 different programs and activities.

However after 13th General Election, he was appointed as Minister of Communication and Multimedia under the new cabinet line up of Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.[6]
