Lara is currently represented by Algus Greenspon in New York.
Background and Education
Lara was born in Mexico City in 1978 where she studied Photography at La Escuela Activa de Fotographia and later attended some courses in Philosophy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
Career
Lara entered the international art scene in the early 2000s after completing a residency at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.[2] A prolific and varied artist, with media ranging from video to astroturf,[3] her work deals with questions concerening the institutional critique and process of selection of artwork, more specifically, how do institutions bestow meaning and value on art.[4][5]
In the New Museum's 'The Generational: Younger Than Jesus' exhibition in 2009, Lara's piece, Installation (banana peel), required a guard to place a fresh peel on the museum ground each morning after eating its contents, and also required constant security for visitors. This work is an example of Lara's explorations of division, disruption and contrast; of the art world in this instance.[6]
In her solo show at Kunsthalle Basel in Switzerland in 2012, Symbolic Surface of Revolution, Lara presented a multi-piece installation with a complex array of references from the mathematical to the political. The show's title refers to the mathematical phenomenon of 'surface of revolution,' that is realized in a three-dimensional space when a curve is rotated around a line;[7] Lara furthers this with cylindrical works demonstrating endless surfaces, printed with the image of Photoshop's "canvas," the 'zero' level and numerically-based video in a permanent loop/cycle.[8] The installation also featured multiple white canvases stamped with black horizontal and vertical bars that mimic toppling domino pieces, which play on the other parts of the show's title: symbolism and revolution in a political sense. The 'domino effect,' as used in the Cold War-era to illustrate the way political movements could lead from nation to nation, can be linked to the Arab Spring, as Lara's pieces highlight the symbolism of dominos playing into each other and political events of past and present.[9]
Lara also addresses her cultural heritage through her art, the notion of Mexicanismos can be noted in her exhibition 'Adriana Lara: NY - USA' in late 2012 at Algus Greenspon in New York, where she appropriated images of 1930s Mexican actress Lupe Vélez, who was stereotyped for her accent with the emergence of talkies, and printed them on semi-translucent material only to be further obscured by symbols such an '&' or '!.' In the same year, Lara had created a video piece for Documenta 13, Unpurposely with Purpose, that featured a cartoon animation of a Mexican with a face made up of punctuation.[10]
