Ad-Dukhan (Arabic: سورة الدخان suratu d-Duḫḫān) (Smoke) is the 44th chapter (sura) of the Quran with 59 verses. The first verse is one of Quran's Muqatta'at, the letter combinations that appear in the beginning of some chapters. Verse 37 mentions the people of Tubba, interpreters explain that this refers to the people of Sheba. The word dukhan, meaning 'smoke', is mentioned in verse 10.[1]
Translation
1 "h.m.(Ḥā, Mīm.)"
2 "By the clear Book."
3 "We have sent it down on a blessed night, We had given warning."
4 "Wherein is decided every wise affair."
5 "As an order from us, We were sending (messengers/commands)."
6 "A mercy from you Lord, He both hears and knows."
7 "From the Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between the two, if you were but sure."
8 "There is no god but He, He gives life and makes to die, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients."
9 "No, but they are in doubt, playing."
10 "But expect the day when the heaven shall bring obvious smoke."
11 "To cover men, this is painful torment."
12 "Our Lord! remove from us the torment, we are believers."
13 "How can they have the reminder now, seeing a clear messenger already came to them."
14 "And when they turned their backs away from him and said, 'Taught! mad!'."
15 "We will remove the torment a little, but you will return."
16 "On the day when We will assault with the greatest assault, we will take vengeance."
17 "And We already tried the people of Pharaoh when there came to them a noble messenger."
18 "Send back to me God's servants, I am to you a faithful messenger."
19 "And, rise not up against God, I come to you with a clear authority."
20 "And, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, that you stone me not."
21 "And if you do not believe me then let me alone."
22 "Then he called upon his Lord, 'these are a sinful people'."
23 "Leave the city with My servants during the night, you will be pursued."
24 "But leave the sea in quiet, they are a host to be drowned."
25 "How many gardens and springs have they left."
26 "And fields and splendid places."
27 "And comfort wherein they did enjoy themselves."
28 "Thus, and we gave them for an inheritance to another people."
29 "And the heaven wept not for them, nor the earth, nor were they respited."
30 "But We saved the children of Israel from shameful chastisement."
31 "From Pharaoh, he was tyrant, one of the extravagant."
32 "And We chose them, out of a knowledge, above all worlds."
33 "And We gave them signs wherein was an obvious trial."
34 "These men do say."
35 "There is nothing but our first death, we shall not be revived."
36 "So bring our fathers, if you do speak the truth."
37 "Are they better than the people of Tubba, and those before them? We destroyed them, they were sinners."
38 "Nor did we create the heavens and the earth, and what is between the two in play."
39 "We did but create them in truth, though most of them know it not."
40 "The day of separation is their appointed term."
41 "The day when a friend will not avail a friend, nor shall they be helped."
42 "Save whomsoever God shall have mercy on, He is the mighty, the merciful."
43 "The zaqqum tree."
44 "The food of the sinful."
45 "As it were melting, shall it boil in their bellies."
46 "like the boiling of hot water."
47 "Take him and thrust him into the midst of Hell."
48 "Then pour over his head the torment of hot water."
49 "Taste! you are the mighty, the honorable."
50 "This is that concerning which you were doubting."
51 "The pious shall be in a safe place."
52 "In gardens and springs."
53 "Clothed in silk and brocade, face to face."
54 "Thus, and We will wed them to bright and large-eyed maids."
55 "They shall call therein for every fruit in safety."
56 "They shall not taste therein of death save their first death, and We will keep them from the torment of hell."
57 "Grace from you Lord, that is the grand bliss."
58 "And We have only made it easy for you tongue, that haply they may remember."
59 "So wait, they too will be waiting."
Hadith about sura Ad-Dukhan
- Narrated Masruq ibn al-Ajda': One day I went to Ibn Masud who said, "When Quraish delayed in embracing Islam, the Prophet I invoked Allah to curse them, so they were afflicted with a (famine) year because of which many of them died and they ate the carcasses and Abu Sufyan came to the Prophet and said, 'O Muhammad! You came to order people to keep good relation with kith and kin and your nation is being destroyed, so invoke Allah I ? So the Prophet I recited the Holy verses of Sirat-Ad-Dukhan: 'Then watch you For the day that The sky will Bring forth a kind Of smoke Plainly visible.' (44.10) When the famine was taken off, the people renegade once again as nonbelievers. The statement of Allah, (in Sura "Ad-Dukhan"-44) refers to that: 'On the day when We shall seize You with a mighty grasp.' (44.16) And that was what happened on the day of the battle of Badr." Asbath added on the authority of Mansur, "Allah's Apostle prayed for them and it rained heavily for seven days. So the people complained of the excessive rain. The Prophet said, 'O Allah! (Let it rain) around us and not on us.' So the clouds dispersed over his head and it rained over the surroundings."[2][3]
- Narrated Masruq ibn al-Ajda': We came upon 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud and he said "O people! If somebody knows something, he can say it, but if he does not know it, he should say, "Allah knows better,' for it is a sign of having knowledge to say about something which one does not know, 'Allah knows better.' Allah said to His Prophet: 'Say (O Muhammad ! ) No wage do I ask of You for this (Quran) nor am I one of the pretenders (a person who pretends things which do not exist).' (38.86) Now I will tell you about Ad-Dukhan (the smoke), Allah's Apostle invited the Quraish to embrace Islam, but they delayed their response. So he said, "O Allah! Help me against them by sending on them seven years of famine similar to the seven years of famine of Joseph." So the famine year overtook them and everything was destroyed till they ate dead animals and skins. People started imagining to see smoke between them and the sky because of severe hunger. Allah said:'Then watch you for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke plainly visible, covering the people. . . This is painful torment.' (44.10-11) (So they invoked Allah) "Our Lord! Remove the punishment from us really we are believers." How can there be an (effectual) reminder for them when an Apostle, explaining things clearly, has already come to them? Then they had turned away from him and said: 'One taught (by a human being), a madman?' 'We shall indeed remove punishment for a while, but truly, you will revert (to disbelief).' (44.12-15) Will the punishment be removed on the Day of Resurrection?" 'Abdullah added, "The punishment was removed from them for a while but they reverted to disbelief, so Allah destroyed them on the Day of Badr. Allah said:'The day We shall seize you with a mighty grasp. We will indeed (then) exact retribution." (44.16)[4][5]
