4DX is a motion picture technology owned and developed by South Korean company CJ 4DPLEX, a part of the CJ Group. 4DX allows a motion picture presentation to be augmented with environmental effects such as motion, scents, mist and wind, outside the standard video and audio. As such, it requires a theatre with special equipment (in the same way that IMAX theatres require special equipment/design).

The technology was introduced commercially in 2009 with the release of Journey to the Center of the Earth in Seoul, South Korea.[1] Due to the huge success of the film Avatar, the technology has expanded to more theaters throughout South Korea and in Venezuela, China, Israel, Thailand, Russia, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Hungary, Japan, Poland, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Taiwan, and Chile, with more theaters being prepared in Croatia, Ukraine, and Indonesia.[2]

As of August 2013, the 4DX technology has achieved over 10,000 seats in 16 countries and 58 cities.[3]

History

4DX was launched by South Korean theater chain, CJ CGV with the release of New Line Cinema's Journey to the Center of the Earth in Seoul in 2009.[4] In 2010, after the success of Avatar, CGV has expanded more theaters throughout South Korea.[4]

On 2 June 2011, Mexican cineplex company, Cinépolis, have invested $25 million and partnered with CJ Group to open up to 11 4DX rooms.[5] The first 4DX room opened at the Plaza Acoxpa mall in Mexico City with the release of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, as the first 4DX theater in North America and the Western Hemisphere.[5][6] The company has later expanded more theaters throughout South American theaters with the releases of Prometheus and Ice Age: Continental Drift on 1 July 2012 in Brazil,[7][8] DreamWorks Animation's Rise of the Guardians on 12 December 2012 in Peru,[9][10] and Despicable Me 2 on 5 July 2013 in Colombia.[11] The company opened its first room in Guatemala on 17 December 2013, with the release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, as the first 4DX theater in Central America.[12]

On May 6, 2013, CGV released a new 4DX trailer, starring Lee Byung-hun.[13]

Venezuela's Cinex opened its first room on 21 December 2013 with the release of Frozen.[14][15][16]

In 2012, CNN Travel named the CGV Gangbyeon 4DX theatre as one of the world's best movie theatres.[17]

Ukrainian theater chain, Planeta Kino, opened its first 4DX room with the premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on 18 December 2013.[18]

VOX Cinemas is set to open their first 4DX theater in the United Arab Emirates on 22 December 2013.[19]

On January 15, South Korean theater chain and 4DX founder, CJ CGV will open its first theater in Vietnam, along with the technology with the release of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.[20]

Description

A theatre can be built or retrofitted with special equipment to support 4DX features, which include[1][21]

  • Seat motion and vibration
  • Jets of air or water
  • Mist
  • Wind
  • Strobe lighting
  • Fog or smoke
  • Aromatic vapours (from a collection of 1000 scents)
  • Bubbles

For a motion picture to make use of the 4DX features available in a theatre, a 4DX "track" needs to be programmed on top of the existing video and audio tracks. In other words, a 4DX movie is a standard movie with the addition of a 4DX track that controls the 4DX features during playback. The programming of the track is done by CJ 4DPlex, the CJ CGV subsidiary who developed the technology, in some cases with the participation of the studio that originally produced the original movie.[1] Programming a 4DX track into a movie typically takes less than a month.[21]
