What Separates Me from You track listing

"2nd Sucks" is a song by the American rock band A Day to Remember. The song was released on February 27, 2012[2] as the fourth and final single from the band's fourth studio album, What Separates Me from You.

Music and lyrics

2nd Sucks is more of an angry song, and so we wanted the music to portray that emotion, rather than just the lyrics or the melody of the vocals. [...] 2nd Sucks is a very aggressive, pissed-off song. We wanted the music to translate that as well.[3]

– Neil Westfall, on describing the musical equality, 2011

Lead vocalist, Jeremy McKinnon wrote the lyrics, while the music was written by Tom Denney, McKinnon, guitarist Kevin Skaff, producer Chad Gilbert and A Day to Remember.[4] The song contains a sample from the Mortal Kombat series of video games.[5][6]

It's strongly implied that the song is entirely or partly written about pop-punk band Four Year Strong, numerous references of the band and their music exist in both the video and the lyrics - this leads to much speculation amongst fans. It's also believed that Four Year Strong's "It Must Really Suck To Be Four Year Strong Right Now" and "Paul Revere's Midnight Ride" are written about A Day To Remember.

Music video

The music video for the song was released on February 27, 2012 and runs for 5:05. The video features 3 kids who play a video game called 2nd Sucks based on the band. The video also has former member Tom Denney, producer Andrew Wade, and Chris Kirkpatrick of 'N Sync.[5] The final battle of the game has frontman McKinnon up against a man by the name of Beardo (a shirtless, overweight man who resembles Dan O'Connor of Four Year Strong).[7] The man also uses a move called Bada Belly (referring to "Bada Bing Wit' A Pipe" from the bands album Rise or Die Trying). McKinnon uses a move called Roundhouse that Doubt Built (named after "This Is the House That Doubt Built" off of the album).

Liz Ramanand from Loudwire called the music video "very creative", with "high energy performance scenes" of the band, and "passionately vigorous fans moshing and spiraling around."[5]
