1983 is a Malayalam film directed by fashion photographer Abrid Shine,[1] who has written the story and co-written the script with Bipin Chandran.[2] A family drama that revolves around cricket, it centres on the character Rameshan played by Nivin Pauly and his memories from 1983 when India won its first World Cup under Kapil Dev to 2013.[3] Anoop Menon plays Vijay Menon, who was once a noted Ranji Trophy player and is now a brilliant coach. Joy Mathew, Rajeev Pillai, Jacob Gregory, Saiju Kurup, Aju Varghese, Shine Tom Chacko, Srinda Ashab, Dinesh and Sanju, make up the rest of 1983’s team.[2][3] Nikki Galrani is the heroine.[4] 1983 is being produced under the banner of Shams Films. Pradeesh Varma cranks the camera and music director is Gopi Sunder.[2]

Plot

The film talks the passion for cricket among some people in a remote village in Kerala named Brahmamangalam starting from the year 1983, where India won their first World Cup, till the present times.

The film started its shoot in May 2013 in Ernakulam and produced by Shamsudheen under banner of Shams films.[5] The movie distribution was done by LJ Films owned by director Lal Jose .[6]

The music is composed by Gopi Sunder and the song Olanajali Kuruvi has become quite popular even before movie has released.

Music by Gopi Sunder is a treat to the ears. Especially the song 'Olanjaali kuruvi...' sung by Vani Jayaram and Jayachandran, is sure to capture anyone's mind. Other songs too suits the movie theme. BGM of the movie is pleasing and high on energy.

Reception

1983 received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics.Entertainment site oneindia gave 3.5/5 stars and said "1983 is a thoroughly enjoyable entertainer which pleases your heart throughout. For almost all generations, it's a nostalgic revisit to those childhood memories, where you had played cricket with your friends, a tennis ball, wickets of stick, and a bat carved from leaf stalk".[7] Muyal media has given the movie 4/5 stars and mentioned the movie as a "Must watch cricket match" .[8] Onlookersmedia has given 4/5 stars and said "Just like the 1983 world cup which saw the under dogs India lifting the Cup. The movie 1983 also clinches the trophy for a clean-entertainment film of recent times." [9] The Malayalam movie review website lensmenreviews has mentioned 1983 as An elegantly made charming film with abundant humor and sensible emotions. With perfect casting and sound visuals to enhance its quality, this movie from debutante director Abrid Shine is a pleasure ride.The website has given a rating of 4/5 stars[10] Sibin Sivanad of Theater Balcony praised the film's director and its nostalgic feel and went on to tell that "A nostalgic journey to rediscover the golden days of Cricket, where the most adorent fans treat cricket a part of their life and Sachin as their God. A wonderful tribute to the living legend Sachin Tendulkar, and for all those who loved cricket more than their life. Abrid Shine truly deserve a pat on the back for his truly refreshing, nostalgic movie 1983."[11]
