The 1976 Songpan-Pingwu earthquake, magnitude 7.2, struck Songpan and Pingwu in Sichuan, China on August 16, 1976. A M 6.7 and a M 7.2 aftershock earthquakes hit the same area on August 22 and 23.[1] The earthquake struck with estimated population exposures of 1,500 at intensity IX or greater and 5,700 at intensity VIII, resulting in 41 deaths.[2]
