From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(5099) Iainbanks is a main-belt minor planet.
It was discovered by Henri Debehogne at La Silla Observatory in Chile on February 16, 1985 and numbered 1985 DY1. It is the same body that was also numbered 1971 TD1, 1979 WC7 and 1990 HJ2.[1]
On 23 June 2013, the Committee for Small Body Nomenclature of the International Astronomical Union named the asteroid for author Iain Banks.[2][3]
Its official citation in Minor Planet Circular 84151 reads:
- "Iain M. Banks (1954-2013) was a Scottish writer best known for the Culture series of science fiction novels; he also wrote fiction as Iain Banks. An evangelical atheist and lover of whisky, he scorned social media and enjoyed writing music. He was an extra in Monty Python & The Holy Grail."
