Ṭhenphunga Sailo (known as Brig Ṭhenphunga and Brig T Sailo) (born January 1, 1922) was the Chief Minister of Mizoram, India from 1977 to 1978 and from 1979 to 1984. He currently resides in Kannan Veng, Aizawl. Presently he is the President of MPC and was elected from the Aizawl South 2 Constituency in the 2008 Mizoram Assembly Elections.[1][2][3]
Childhood
Brig Thenphunga was born to Mizo Chief Mr Vancheuva and Mrs Hrangvungi.
Education
He completed his Elementary schooling in Serkawn Middle School in Lunglei, and then went on to High School in Shillong from 1937 to 1940. He then went on to complete his college studies in Serampore College in 1941. He completed Intermediate in Sciences, then under the University of Calcutta, before he joined the Indian Army Officer in 1942.
Army Life
Being among the first Mizo Army Officers, he was promoted to Lt Colonel in 1960, in 1963 he was again promoted to Colonel and then in 1966 to Brigadier.
Politics
After retiring from Army life as Brigadier, in 1974, he was a member of the Human Rights Committee fighting for alleged Army excess against civilian's caught[4] in the separatist conflict between the Indian Army and Mizo National Front. He Submitted a Momerandum containing 36 cases of atrocities by the Indian Army since March 1, 1966. On April 17, 1975 he finally started the People's Conference Party. In 1977 while Mizoram was still a Union Territory, he was elected Chief Minister, and in 1984 became the opposition Leader. For a short while he changed the party's name to Mizoram Janata Dal but reverted it back to its old party name Mizoram People's Conference. In 1999 he was awarded the Padma Shree. In the 1998 elections, he was appointed the Principal Adviser to the Chief Minister. His ministry has also initiated the Aizawl city extension project, Bairabi Dam which he alleged were never pursued by the successive governments .[5]
