On February 1, 2014, González took on Jesus Galicia in a bout for the WBC Latino Silver featherweight championship at Foro Scotiabank (Scotiabank Forum) in the Polanco district of Mexico City, a bout that was televised across Mexico and Latin America by Televisa. Favored to win against the 12-7 Galicia, González was beaten by a knockout in the tenth round of the scheduled twelve-rounder and suffered severe brain damage. He fell into an almost immediate coma after the fight and by the time he reached a local hospital, brain death had occurred. On February 3, González was pronounced dead at the age of twenty-three.[2][3]
