Álvaro Rey Vázquez (born 11 July 1989 in Seville, Andalusia) is a Spanish professional footballer who plays for Toronto FC in Major League Soccer, as a right winger.
Football career
In the 2010 summer, after playing with both Real Betis' reserve teams, Rey signed for Gimnàstic de Tarragona in Segunda División. On 31 October he made his official debut for the club, playing five minutes in a 1–1 home draw against Córdoba CF.[1] He spent the vast majority of his first professional season switching between Gimnàstic and its farm team, Pobla de Mafumet CF.
On 4 December 2010 Rey started for Nàstic for the first time, in a 1–2 home defeat against Villarreal CF B.[2] On 21 January 2012 he scored his first goal for the Catalan club, the only in the home match against Elche CF,[3] but his team eventually suffered relegation.
After two seasons with Gimnàstic, being relegated in his second, Rey was released.[4] On 17 July 2012 he signed a two-year contract with Xerez CD.[5]
The Andalusians dropped two divisions at the end of the 2012–13 campaign, due to financial irregularities. Subsequently Rey went on trial with Toronto FC of the Major League Soccer, appearing in a reserve team match and signing with the club on 25 July 2013.[6] He scored his first goal for his new club on 28 September, in a 4–1 win over D.C. United.[7]
