AUM is the primary (highest) name of the God as per the Vedas. The symbol originates from the combination of three letters अ (A) + ऊ (U) + म (M). अ refers to Viraat, Agni and Vishwa. ऊ refers to Hiranyagarbh, Vaayu and Tejas. म refers to Ishwar, Aditya and Praana. These are different attributes of the God. It is written as ओ३म् in the Vedas.
