Šmarje-Sap is a settlement in the Grosuplje municipality in central Slovenia. The area is part of the historical region of Lower Carniola. The municipality is now included in the Central Slovenia statistical region.[2]
The parish church from which the settlement gets its name is dedicated to Saint Mary and belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ljubljana. It is a 13th century Romanesque building that was extended and restyled over the centuries. A defence tower that was part of a defence enclosure round the church erected to protect the local population against Ottoman raids survives.[3]
