cXense was founded in 2010 by a team of people that have worked in the internet technology and media industry since the late 1990s. The main purpose was to develop technology that can understand the full context of any online and mobile activity, and then use this capability to deliver context-aware applications that improve the user experience and efficiency of online web sites.
The cXense products are delivered in a software as a service (SaaS) model, and are based on the concept of context computing and context-aware applications, as defined by Gartner.[1][2]
Context computing is used as a foundation for online services that aim to improve the relevance of applications, such as online advertising, online recommendations, user profiling, web content personalization, and web site search. From an algorithmic perspective, machine learning and feedback loops, combined with leveraging network effects, are used to compute the complete context of the end user.
By February 2011, cXense has three commercially available white-label products:
cXense is often positioned as an alternative to Google AdWords.[3] cXense products are used by newspaper publishers, media companies, online directories, online classifieds, e-commerce, mobile operators and telecom carriers.
cXense conducts joint R&D with universities such as the University of Oslo (UiO), and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) to develop new algorithmic technologies, and is supported by Innovation Norway, the Norwegian Government organization promoting industrial development.
cXense has offices in Australia, Europe, Japan, and USA.
