Zumiez is a mall-based, specialty apparel store founded by Tom Campion and Gary Haakenson in 1978, and publicly traded since 2005. "Offering gear and clothing for the skater, snowboarder, and surfer,"[2] Zumiez sells action-sports related clothing and has created an image based around action sports like skateboarding, snowboarding, and motocross. Zumiez is based in Everett, Washington. The current president and CEO is Scott Emmer.[3]

Originally named "Above the Belt" when the first store was opened at Seattle's Northgate Mall in 1978, the company grew quickly through the early 80's with the addition of stores at Everett Mall (Everett, WA), Alderwood Mall (Lynnwood, WA), Tacoma Mall (Tacoma, WA) and Bellevue Square (Bellevue, WA). The mid and late Eighties brought new stores online outside of the Puget Sound area and the corporate name change to Zumiez. The corporate offices were moved from the Northgate Store to Everett, WA where they still reside today.

Stores

There are currently over 425 Zumiez stores in 38 states across the country. Additionally, plans are in place to open Zumiez stores in Canada[4]. Coquitlam Centre will be the first Canadian shopping center with a Zumiez[5]. Zumiez is a leading retailer for lifestyle brands centering on action sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding, BMX, and motocross[6].

Image

Zumiez stores are designed with an "organized chaos" theme that "that is consistent with many teenagers' lifestyles."[7] Zumiez stores are stocked with couches and video games to encourage customers "to shop for longer periods of time and to interact with each other and the store associates." Each store is approx. 2,900 sq. feet.[3] The stores generally feature the sales floor, a couch with video games and television, changing rooms, and a 'skate shop.' However, this plan may be modified based on space restrictions.

Neither Zumiez in Massapequa, NY at the Sunrise Westfield Mall nor the Zumiez in Miami, FL at Sunset Place have couches or videogames due to their small space. Neither does the Zumiez in Watertown, NY in the Salmon Run Mall.

Every summer, Zumiez holds their annual "Couch Tour" in which several skateboarding teams travel the country (mall to mall) and host an outdoor free demo where they show off their best skateboarding skills. Other key parts of the Couch Tour include free live music provided by popular bands, product giveaways, games, as well as the titular couch and TV set up with the Tony Hawk skateboarding video game.

Financial

The company purchased the apparel company Fast Forward in 2006.[8]
