Zhombe

Zhombe (formerly known as Jombe) is a village in the province of Midlands, Zimbabwe. It is located about 55 km north-west of Kwekwe and 100 km south-east of Gokwe.

Well known growth points in Zhombe:

  1. Joel, named after the famous Joel Tessa businessman.
  2. St Andrews, most of the shops there are owned by a well known businessman, Mr Choga, also known as "Skondai."
  3. Mushangi, this point is a bit dangerous especially during the festive season as there are many people. Used to be a well known growth point but now it has lost its cool. Remains a historic point in Zhombe.
  4. St Georges, this growth point started off with only one shop owned by Nedhi. For years people who live in or around had only Nedhi to take care of them. The place was very remote but in 2000, some fellow bought a place at the point and built a much bigger shop, grinding mills and in no time, it became a well known growth point known in the book of Samambwa.
  5. Bhamala, this used to be the biggest growth point, much bigger than the mentioned 3, and had a lot of shops around it. One could get anything at this growth point, but for a much higher price, of course. The place is surrounded by "Makorokoza" so the people there are not worried about spending but like Mushange, it also has lost its cool.

Zhombe, particularly Zhombwe East, is where the late Chief Samambwa used to reside. He died in 2009. His jurisdiction extends as far as Empress, Sidakeni and Mangwarangwara. Zhombe East is rich in gold, which has saved the lives of the majority of Zhombe residents who had resorted to gold panning for the past 5 years of drought.

Some of the famous figures in Zhombe East include the headmen: Sabhuku Ndumo, Sabhuku Mudhondo, Sabhuku Nedhi Duro (now replaced by his son Muchineripi), Sabjhuku Mahundi & Mutandi known as Calisto. However, other fallen Zhombe heroes include Mr Makwanya, Mr Mavhangira junior, Mr Masukume, Mr Nyathi Mr Mushangi sons Hebert Stan and Irvin and many others. The late Mr Hudson Mushangi moved to Zhombe in 1970 and opened a shop, butchery and grinding mill. He was unfortunately murdered in 1978. None really knows for sure who was responsible.

The schools surrounding this area include Donjani Secondary School and primary, St Faith secondary school and primary, St Andrews primary school, and St George primary school. There has been an increase of the churches called the Madzibabas that is the Vapostori who believe that they work and talk with the holy spirit.

Food crops that are popularly grown in Zhombwe include maize, groundnuts, roundnuts, sorghum, millet and cotton.

During the early 1990s, the entertainment industry emerged through the likes of one of the Kerere sons who used to sing the song by the name of "Kufamba kwake Miriyemu kunobuda mapepa" which was often played in Ndari (i.e. in households where local home brewed beer was sold).

The political atmosphere has substantially changed in Zhombe East. This area has been known for years for being politically stable and violence free. However, following the Government of National Unity (GNU),the Zhombe residents have been witnessing free expression of political views. The MDC party has been amassing lots of support and the current MP for the whole of Zhombe is from the MDC party. The elders have been urging the young ones not to be used by politicians, to murder, torture and harass people for the politicians' political self interest. Quite a number of middle aged men who were used to brutally murder supporters of the opposition party, the MDC, have died and some have suffered mental disturbances whilst some were rotting in prisons after having been used to commit crime for political ends, whilst their political masters walk freely and feast sumptuously. The peace loving people of Zhombe detest political violence and people who come to inflict violent mentality in the reluctant minds of Zhombe people have been greatly criticised by Zhombe residents . Each time they come to address political meetings the people's hearts bleed. Such people who are agents of violence include the feared George Makombe. According to recent updates, the Zhombe people still remain devoted to unity, peace and prosperity of their village. Any politician or anyone acting on behalf of politicians, who comes to address the people of Zhombe using violent language or hate speech and encouraging torture (that includes physical infliction of pain) will be risking losing the hearts of the people, and consequently will be regarded as an abomination to the village. The Zhombe people have politically matured and are very much updated about their rights.
