An attacking midfielder, he started his career playing for Shaanxi Guoli (Later renamed to Ningbo Guoli) and their various youth teams. In 2001 Stockport County F.C. would take Zhang Xiaobin on loan as a 16 year-old after impressing them when Shaanxi Guoli sent their youth team to train in Stockport.[1] While at Stockport Zhang Xiaobin spent three years rising through the youth and reserve teams, however he was unable to break into the first team.[2]
He moved around the Australian Leagues between 2005 to 2006 after failing to hold down a spot with Stockport County F.C. Zhang would move to A-League side New Zealand Knights to start his senior career before moving to Kingston City FC until he finally moved back to China to play for Changsha Ginde.[3]
Zhang transferred to Tianjin Teda on 2 April 2010.[4]
He made his debut for the China Olympic team (U23) at the age of 18.
